PM’s Aide Advocates for Comprehensive Climate Risk Management in Pakistan

Islamabad: A top aide to Pakistan’s Prime Minister has called for the implementation of a comprehensive climate risk management strategy to better prepare the nation for natural disasters. Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister for Climate Change, emphasized the need for action at national, provincial, and district levels to mitigate the economic, social, and environmental impacts of climate-related challenges.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, Ms. Alam delivered her remarks during the “Humanitarian Futures” event organized by the International Rescue Committee. She highlighted the increasing severity of climate impacts in Pakistan, such as devastating floods, heatwaves, and erratic rainfall, which have disproportionately affected vulnerable communities.

Ms. Alam pointed to Pakistan’s history of severe floods, including a major disaster in 2022 that displaced millions, destroyed crops, and damaged infrastructure. She underscored the necessity of flood resilience and disaster risk reduction measures to protect marginalized populations and critical infrastructure.

At COP29 in Baku, Ms. Alam noted several initiatives aimed at combating climate change, including climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy projects. She stressed Pakistan’s reliance on glaciers and rivers for water, warning of acute shortages that threaten agriculture, a key sector of the economy.

She also called for improved access to international climate funds, advocating for investment in long-term solutions to enhance resilience against climate impacts. Ms. Alam highlighted the importance of integrating disaster risk financing into global strategies, promoting proactive measures to manage rising climate-related costs.

The address concluded with a call for urgent and coordinated action to confront the climate crisis and safeguard the country’s future.
