Traders in Thatta took to the streets to protest against the project of extracting six new canals from the Indus River.
A rally was organized under the leadership of the All Traders Alliance Thatta, with a large number of traders, political and social leaders, and citizens participating.
The rally began at the National Bank Thatta and proceeded along the National Highway, culminating in front of the Press Club Thatta. Here, the demonstrators staged a protest, raising slogans against the project.
The rally was led by district president Muhammad Ashraf Chand, Aziz Jogi, Muhammad Musa Sabzposh, Shiraz Wario, and Hamid Mughal. The leaders stated that extracting new canals from the Indus River would render Sindh barren.
The protesters highlighted that due to the lack of water supply downstream of Kotri, the sea is encroaching, affecting coastal lands, harming the agricultural economy, and causing financial difficulties for fishermen.
The leaders further stated that Sindh is already facing a water shortage, and the creation of new canals could worsen the situation. They demanded the federal government immediately announce the cancellation of the canal project.
