Karachi, March 06, 2018 (PPI-OT): The Women Development Department, Government of Sindh and Sindh Commission on the Status of Women and visited central prison Karachi on the occasion of International Women Day Ms. Irum Khalid (Special Assistant to C.M Sindh for WDD) and Ms. Nuzhat Shirin (Chairperson SCSW) with MNAS, MPAS Sindh and celebrated the day with women prisoners and children. The Additional Secretary Women Development Ms. Abida Lodhi, Director Women Development Ms Musarrat Jabeen, Members SCSW and media representatives were also accompanied with them.
The Jail Superintendent told on this occasion that 135 women prisoners are present in the Jail. Ms. Nuzhat Shirin said that Sindh Commission on the Status of Women (SCSW) has established as independent entity under the Sindh Commission on the Status of Women Act -2015 for promotion of social, economic, political and legal rights of women as provided in the Constitution of “Islamic Republic of Pakistan” 1973 and in accordance with International Declarations, Conventions, treaties, covenants and agreement relating to Women, including Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
She said commission will form a strong network with police officers / police station for combat Gender Base Violence (GBV), to First Investigation Report (FIR) will be launched immediately if the case will be reported. She also said that Commission will make Women Friendly Desks in all police station in Sindh.
Ms. Irum Khalid said that Women Development Department had prepare women friendly laws for providing protection Sindh Domestic Violence Act (2013), Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act (2013), and implementation of the Protection Against Harassment of Women at Work Place Act (2010). The WDD also provided Legal assistance to Women Prisoners in all the Jails of Sindh through legal aid committee.
During the visit women prisoners share their problems and grievances with Chairperson SCSW and Minister WDD. In the end Ms. Irum Khalid (Special Assistant to C.M Sindh for WDD) and Ms. Nuzhat Shirin (Chairperson SCSW) distributed gifts and sweets to women prisoners and children.
