The alleged ringleader of an inter-district dacoit gang was taken into custody in an injured condition after an exchange of fire with authorities on Tuesday near Head Glacier in the Basirpur area. Authorities said the suspect was injured by the firing of his own fleeing accomplices.
The action was initiated when law enforcement agencies responded to a report that three armed men had forcibly snatched a motorcycle and cash from a citizen named Muhammad Yousuf.
A team from the Basirpur police station, led by SHO Adnan Rafiq, immediately reached the spot. Upon seeing the police arrive, the suspects opened fire.
The authorities retaliated with defensive fire. During the exchange of fire, one suspect was injured by a gunshot and was subsequently arrested.
The captured individual has been identified as Zafar Iqbal, who is allegedly involved in 24 cases of serious crimes, including dacoity and highway robbery. His criminal record is registered in various police stations, including Lahore and Okara.
The stolen motorcycle and a weapon were recovered from the arrested suspect.
His two accomplices managed to escape under the cover of fire. A comprehensive search operation is underway to locate and apprehend the fleeing fugitives.
