An intense storm system unleashed flash floods and paralyzed traffic across northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday, leaving residents confined to their homes and causing extensive damage after a deluge of heavy rain and hail lashed the region.
The severe weather, which plunged areas like Dir into darkness, triggered flash floods in local streams and nullahs. This surge of water disrupted movement on the vital Grand Trunk (GT) Road, brought on widespread power outages as electricity systems failed, and eroded several roads in upper areas, further isolating communities.
In addition to the infrastructure challenges, the hailstorm inflicted significant harm on the local agriculture and property. Standing crops and fruit orchards sustained considerable damage, while numerous vehicles were also damaged by the intense downpour and hail.
Meanwhile, the federal capital also experienced the turbulent weather system. A heavy downpour accompanied by a hailstorm struck Islamabad, causing a sharp drop in the temperature and signaling an abrupt start to the colder season. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had earlier forecast the precipitation for the twin cities between November 4 and 5.
In response to the escalating situation, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has issued a high alert for continued heavy rains and potential snowfall in various parts of the province until November 5. All district administrations have been directed to remain vigilant and implement precautionary measures to mitigate potential losses.
