Sindh Unveils New Maritime Security System for Fishermen

The Sindh government on Tuesday approved amendments to the Sindh Registration and Regulation of Fishing Jetties Rules, 2022, introducing a new security identification system for fishermen aimed at strengthening maritime surveillance, improving safety, and curbing illegal activities along the province’s coastline.

Speaking to the media after a Sindh Cabinet meeting, Provincial Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Muhammad Ali Malkani said the amendments were intended to modernise the fishing jetties system, improve facilities for fishermen, and promote the sustainable conservation of marine resources. He said the cabinet had also approved the introduction of new security scarves equipped with an integrated identification system to enhance the monitoring and protection of fishermen operating within the country’s maritime boundaries.

He said the new identification system would enable security agencies deployed at sea to rapidly identify, monitor, and assist fishermen whenever required. According to the minister, the initiative would strengthen maritime security, help prevent illegal activities, safeguard national maritime boundaries, protect the lives and property of fishermen, and ensure a faster rescue and emergency response.

Earlier, during the Sindh Cabinet meeting, Malkani presented the proposed amendments to the Sindh Registration and Regulation of Fishing Jetties Rules, 2022. The meeting was attended by Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon, Provincial Minister for Food Makhdoom Mahboob-uz-Zaman, Provincial Minister for Agriculture, Sports and Youth Affairs Sardar Muhammad Bakhsh Mehr, along with other provincial ministers and senior government officials.

Malkani said the Sindh government would continue working closely with all relevant institutions to modernise maritime security and improve the safety and welfare of the province’s fishing community.
