Islamabad, October 01, 2020 (PPI-OT): Spokesperson Punjab Government, Dr. Zarqa Suharwardy Taimur called on Federal Minister for Narcotics Control Muhammad Azam Khan Swati in his office today. They discussed increased use of narcotics drugs in educational institutions, strategies and initiatives to make Educational Institutions free from narcotics drugs. Dr. Zarqa Suharwardi briefed the Federal Minister about her team work and initiative to make University Campuses Drugs Free. She said that their first pilot project on eradication of drugs from universities has been launched in GC University, Lahore. She further said that their initiative and team is supported by SUSSEX University of UK. She informed that her team is working to extend the said project to other campuses to wipe out the scourge of drugs.
The Federal Minister Azam Khan Swati appreciated the initiative and efforts of Dr. Zarqa and her team and said that it is a very challenging task to make society especially the educational institutions free from narcotics drugs. He noted that mutual cooperation and joint work between the Federal and Provincial Governments is required for this challenging task. Azam Khan Swati said that we must take action on national level and urgent basis with dedication and perseverance to fight against the drugs smugglers and sellers.
They are deteriorating the lives of our young generation. The meeting discussed in detail ways and means to eradicate narcotics drugs from educational instructions. The Federal Minister informed Dr. Zarqa and her team about Ministry of Narcotics Control efforts and initiatives to eradicate menace of drugs from society especially educational institutions. He further said that he held high level meetings with Ministers of Provincial Governments, Law Enforcing Agencies, Higher Education Commission, Federal Directorate of Education, Private Educational Institutions and Civil Society Organizations for devising a strategy to stop use of narcotics drugs in educational institutions.
He further said that recently he arranged a meeting of Provincial Governors including Gilgit-Baltistan and AJ and K in the president house where the provincial governors who are also chancellors of the universities, were briefed about the increased use of narcotics drugs in educational institutions. He said that Governor of Provinces were advised to direct Vice Chancellors of universities to prepare a plan and strategy about bringing to an end the use of narcotics drugs in universities. He further said that meeting with vice chancellors will be held soon for further coordination and cooperation. The Federal Minister Azam Khan Swati appreciated her initiative and assured full cooperation from the federal government and Ministry of Narcotics Control.
