The Sindh United Party (SUP) on Friday set up a protest camp and staged a token hunger strike in front of the Hyderabad Press Club against the proposed construction of six canals on the Indus River.
The token hunger strike was attended by a large number of party leaders and workers, including SUP Senior Vice President Roshan Ali Buriro.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Buriro accused the federal government of exploiting Sindh’s resources by “robbing” the Indus River water and inflicting injustice.
He claimed that projects like Cholistan and Thal Canals, along with the proposed six canals, were aimed to render millions of acres of Sindh’s land barren and economically devastate the soil of province.
The STP leader further stated that Sindh’s farmers were already suffering from severe water shortages. He criticized the Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and other elected PPP representatives for what he called remaining silent over the issue.
Buriro also accused Asif Ali Zardari of approving the illegal canal projects on July 8, terming it an act of injustice against the people of Sindh.
