As an important step towards wildlife conservation, the Sindh government has today formally recognized the peacock as the “Bird of Sindh,” as stated in the “Sindh Wildlife Protection Rules 2022,” reflecting the bird’s deep cultural and social significance in the region.
The Thar region and the Karoonjhar mountains, rich in biodiversity, serve as natural habitats for these magnificent birds. The 2021 survey by the Sindh Wildlife Protection Department revealed an impressive population of over 100,000 peacocks in two tehsils of Tharparkar.
Peacocks, including both males and females, consume a variety of foods, including small insects, scorpions, snakes, berries, wild fruits, and seeds. Their interaction with human populations becomes more common when food is scarce. In contrast, the monsoon season provides abundant food, allowing them to spread over large areas.
These birds are inherently social, living in groups where a dominant male protects his harem from emerging rivals. Despite their strong population, peacocks face numerous threats, including habitat loss due to growing human populations, urban development, and infrastructure projects such as roads and power lines. Additionally, illegal hunting of chicks and egg theft from nests further jeopardize their numbers.
The accompanying video, shared by Sindh Wildlife on X, showcases the life of a male peacock in its natural environment in Tharparkar, providing visual evidence of this bird’s integration into the region’s ecological and cultural life.
This announcement reaffirms Sindh’s commitment not only to a celebrated bird but also to the preservation of an important part of its natural heritage.
