Top leadership including President and Prime Minister pay tribute to Benazir Bhutto on her death anniversary

Pakistan’s top leadership, including the President and Prime Minister, paid rich tributes to former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on her death anniversary today, terming her as an important symbol of the nation’s democratic struggle and vowing to uphold her progressive thinking.

In a message commemorating the day, President Asif Ali Zardari reaffirmed a commitment to advancing Ms Bhutto”s aspiration for a democratic, inclusive, and forward-looking Pakistan. He stated that her life and sacrifice are intrinsically linked to the country”s democratic journey.

The President noted that Ms Bhutto stood firmly for the supremacy of the Constitution, the authority of Parliament, and the fundamental right of citizens to elect their own representatives. He added that her vision was for a federation where people of all faiths could coexist with dignity and equal rights.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, in his own tribute, remarked that Ms Bhutto”s political legacy was defined by patriotism, courage, and an unwavering dedication to democratic values.

The Prime Minister highlighted her consistent promotion of tolerance, harmony, and forbearance within the political process, describing these as guiding principles for strengthening the country”s democracy. He also credited her with taking significant steps to empower women and protect the rights of minorities.

Mr Sharif affirmed his government’s resolve to advance the journey of tolerance, rule of law, and public welfare, for which Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto sacrificed her life.

Meanwhile, Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, in a special message on her 18th death anniversary, recalled that Ms Bhutto took historic measures for the continuity of democracy, the independence of the judiciary, electoral reforms, and the empowerment of women.

The Senate Chairman asserted that her principled leadership and steadfast political struggle would forever serve as a guiding light for the Pakistani people, noting she bravely confronted all forms of oppression and devoted her life to public welfare.
