Two tourists die after falling from waterfall in AJK

Mirpur: Two tourists from Punjab lost their lives while one was injured when they fell from a height during their visit to Tarrar Khul Garat Par waterfall near Mirpur in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Sunday.

The injured was shifted to a hospital at Tarrar Khul.

AJK is no stranger to incidents like these as it was on June 12, 2023 that at least nine people were killed while 18 others were injured after a coaster fell into a ravine.

The vehicle, bearing registration number IOT-1493, was returning from Nairiyan, a remote village in AJK’s Sudhnoti district, to Gujranwala.

As the vehicle reached near Jarai village, on the border of Kotli and Mirpur at around 1:00 am, it fell into a ravine due to the “negligence of the driver who was unfamiliar with the area”, said Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kotli Riaz Mughal, adding, “The skid marks on the road suggest the speeding vehicle spun out of the driver’s control before plunging into the ditch,” he said, adding that there were between 28 to 30 people on board the coaster.

Similarly, around six days ago, on June 6, 2023, two tourists were killed after the vehicle they were traveling in skidded off a road and fell into a ravine in Muzaffarabad, the capital city of AJK.

According to the sources, the incident took place in the scenic valley of Ratra, near Pattika of Muzaffarabad district, Azad Jammu Kashmir.

The sources said a woman and man identified as Muhammad Mustafa died in the mishap on the spot. They were traveling in a vehicle no LEF- 5503 that met with an accident.

They are believed to be tourists who came to visit the valley from the Multan district.
