Walk held in Larkana to mark World Diabetes Day

LARKANA: On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, an awareness walk and a seminar was organized in Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Medical University, Larkana. here on Tuesday.

The speakers included the Dean of Medicine and Allied Sciences, Prof. Alam Ibrahim Siddiqui. Principal, Chandka Medical College, Prof Zamir Soomro, Prof Gulzar Ahmed Sheikh, Prof Bashir Sheikh, and other medical experts, students and citizens participated in large numbers.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor Alam Ibrahim Siddiqui, Prof Zamir Soomro, Prof Bashir Shaikh and others said that the latest 2021 report of the International Diabetes Federation is extremely worrying as diabetes is spreading rapidly in the world, including Pakistan. They said that 53 crore diabetes patients are existing in the world and 3 crore 30 lakh people are suffering from this disease in Pakistan. They said that 4 out of 5 diabetes patients in the world belong to poor countries and this disease has now reached from the rich to the poor.

They said that Pakistan is at the third place in the world but the disease is spreading fast among the people due to which Pakistan has come to the first place which shows that people are avoiding exercise or using more junk food. Experts further said that 7 lakh people have died due to sugar in 2021, that is, one death has occurred every five seconds. and in Pakistan one person out of five is suffering from this disease, they added, saying many patients are on the border line.

They said that the symptoms of diabetes include dizziness, burning and numbness in the feet, frequent dry mouth, physical weakness and fatigue, dark vision, frequent urination, sores in different parts of the body, rapid weight loss are also symptoms of diabetes. However, they added, the main reasons for the rapid spread of this disease are lack of exercise and walking, frequent eating due to carelessness, excessive consumption of bakery, junk food products, soft cold drinks, which need to be taken care of immediately. The medical experts further said that the purpose of organizing the seminar is to provide important awareness about this deadly disease.

Carelessness can be dangerous in this disease, they said and added that a diabetic patient should not ignore even the smallest injury and timely treatment including physical and mental health is very important. They said that regular exercise gives good results in the treatment of diabetes. They said that there is an important need to provide complete awareness to patients suffering from this disease, especially in rural areas where education is almost nil. At the end of the event, free glucometers were distributed to diabetic patients.
