World Thalassemia Day Spotlights Equitable Treatment and Awareness

By PPI News Agency May8,2024

Islamabad, Today marks the observance of World Thalassemia Day, with this year’s theme focusing on “Empowering Lives, Embracing Progress: Equitable and Accessible Thalassemia Treatment for All.” The day serves as a vital reminder of the global need for increased awareness and better healthcare access for those affected by this inherited blood disorder.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, International Thalassemia Day emphasizes the importance of solidarity within the thalassemia community and aims to enhance public understanding of the condition’s impact. Thalassemia leads to a reduction in hemoglobin production, which causes the red blood cells to function inadequately and shortens their lifespan, resulting in severe anemia. This can lead to significant health complications, including organ damage and, in severe cases, death. However, thalassemia is treatable through blood transfusions and chelation therapy, emphasizing the need for accessible treatment options.

In her message marking the day, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif highlighted the importance of public awareness to prevent thalassemia. She stressed the necessity for regular blood transfusions for patients, which she noted as a painful process, and advocated for preventive measures such as genetic testing before marriage and frequent blood donations to support affected individuals.
