Spencer Eye Hospital launching cornea grafting, Phaco surgery

KARACHI:Medical and Health Services (M and HS) Department Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has reintroducing eye cornea transplantation and Phaco surgery for patients free of cost.

Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar is likely to inaugurate the eye cornea transplantation (corneal grafting) and Phaco Surgery Units at Spencer Eye Hospital Karachi on February 15, 2019.

Senior Director, Medical and Health Services (M and HS) Department, KMC, Dr Birbal Genani while talking to PPI, said the Spencer Eye Hospital is reintroducing cornea grafting and Phaco eye surgery again after a lapse of 15 years. He said Spencer Eye Hospital had been pioneer in corneal transplant surgery in Sindh province but the service was later suspended due to lack of interest of authorities concerned of KMC.

He informed that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Mayor Karachi Waseem Akhtar and representatives of Lions Clubs International was already singed to relaunch cornea transplantation surgery in the oldest eye care hospital of Sindh province run by KMC.

He explained that corneal transplantation, also known as corneal grafting, is a surgical procedure where a damaged or diseased cornea is replaced by donated corneal tissue. He said Lions Clubs International management had agreed to donate three to four corneas to Spencer Eye Hospital every month for patients.

He further informed that Spencer Eye Hospital is reintroducing corneal grafting and Phaco eye surgery which are very expensive private hospitals. He informed that cost of cornea transplant surgery is Rs100,000 to Rs120,000 at private eye care health facilities but this procedure would be performed free of charge at the Spencer Eye Hospital. He said both eye procedures will be performed free of cost in near future in the hospital.
