Erdogan gives nations food for thought, says Farooq Rehmani

Islamabad, September 24, 2020 (PPI-OT): The Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Freedom League (JKPFL), Muhammad Farooq Rehmani, has welcomed the speech of Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Kashmir, Palestine, Islamophobia and other burning world topics during the ongoing session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Muhammad Farooq Rehmani in a statement in Islamabad said, the people of Kashmir are ever grateful to the Republic of Turkey and its President for focusing on the oldest Kashmir dispute that has been ignored despite dozens of Security Council resolutions to grant the right to self-determination and freedom to Kashmiris.

He said, negligence of the Security Council had encouraged India to annex the IIOJK, dismember it, impose own laws, reorganize settler colonies, acquire land and change the Muslim majority character through a new domicile law.

Muhammad Farooq Rehmani expressed serious concern that the killing, torturing and forcibly disappearing, prosecuting and putting the inhabitants of IIOJK in jails was continuing unabated but the UN had not come to rescue or stop India from playing open foul and fraud against the UN manifesto, Charter and the international resolutions.

In such dark conditions, the President Erdogan has raised a ray of hope for the subjugated Muslims of Kashmir which are fighting alone their battle of peace and freedom against the aggressive and unruly Indian state, he added.

He warned that the Kashmiri Muslim face additional danger of death and destruction as India was being led by an extremist Hindutva government for the first time in 72 years. He demanded an emergency world Kashmir Conference under the aegis of the UN to grant the right of self-determination to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Western countries emboldened India’s anti-Muslim agenda: HRW

New York, September 24, 2020 (PPI-OT): Executive Director of Human Rights Watch (HRW), Kenneth Roth, has said that the refusal by leading Western countries to call out human rights abuses by Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, has only emboldened him in pushing his anti-Muslim agenda.

Kenneth Roth in an exclusive interview with Newsweek, a widely circulated American magazine, said, “Modi has largely got away with his anti-Muslim agenda and his oppression of protests against it, that is the relative lack of criticism from the West has only emboldened him on this abusive path.” Besides Muslims in India, Modi had also been undermining human rights in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the magazine noted.

Roth said: “His (Modi’s) withdrawal of Kashmir’s special status and the subsequent crackdown on dissent, shutting down the Internet, all are part of this broader anti-Muslim element of BJP policy, which Modi either participates in actively or simply tolerates, including the so-called cow-vigilantes, who are basically vigilantes who attack Muslims.”

He said in the Indian state of Assam, 1.9 million Muslims were made stateless, as part of Modi’s anti-Muslim agenda. The desire of leading countries in the West to use India as a counterweight to China’s power and influence as well as the unprincipled approach to human rights pursued by US President Donald Trump had only emboldened the Indian prime minister’s decision to undermine the human rights of Muslim citizens, he added.

Kenneth Roth told Newsweek, “The big issue with India is Prime Minister Modi’s systematic discrimination against Muslims and his tolerance of violence against Muslims.” Modi, who leads the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was banned from both the UK and the US for his role in the 2002 anti-Muslim Gujarat riots, in which more than 1,000 people were killed in communal violence, most of them Muslims. At the time, Modi was the then chief minister of Gujarat.

Since coming to power, the Newsweek noted that Modi had faced growing criticism from opposition parties and human rights organizations over his treatment of minorities, with the UN labelling a citizenship law that Modi’s government passed as fundamentally discriminatory. The magazine noted that human rights organizations have also reported that Indian armed forces are committing serious human rights violations in IIOJK, saying rape, torture and forced disappearances were a routine in the territory.

Asked by the Newsweek why Western governments are reluctant to call out human rights violations in India, Roth said: “It’s [Kashmir] one piece of a larger anti-Muslim agenda which the West has largely ignored. India is a major power, a major country. There is increasing tension with China and some just soften the criticism of India because they see it as an ally in competition with China.”

Pakistan lauds Turkish leader for raising Kashmir at UN

Islamabad, September 24, 2020 (PPI-OT): Prime Minister Imran Khan thanked the Turkish president for raising the Kashmir issue during his speech to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). “Deeply appreciate President Recep Tayyip Erdogan once again raising his voice in support of the rights of the Kashmiri people during his address to UNGA,” Imran Khan tweeted.

He added that Turkey’s unwavering support remains a source of strength for the Kashmiris in their legitimate struggle for self-determination. On Tuesday, addressing the General Assembly, Erdogan said the Kashmir conflict is key to stability and peace in South Asia.

“Steps taken following the abolition of the special status of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) further complicated the problem,” the president said, referring to a controversial step taken in August 2019. “We are in favour of solving this issue through dialogue, within the framework of the United Nations resolutions and especially in line with the expectations of the people of Kashmir,” he added.

Pakistan supports Turkey

Munir Akram, Pakistan’s ambassador to the UN, also said his country supports Erdogan’s bold statement on global issues at the General Assembly and his clear stance on IIOJK. “We also fully support President Erdogan’s call for declaring an international day against Islamophobia,” Akram tweeted after Erdogan’s address.

In his speech, Erdogan reiterated his call for the UN to declare March 15, the day in 2019 a terrorist killed 51 Muslims in New Zealand, an “International Solidarity Day Against Islamophobia.” The Organization of Islamic Cooperation, the second-largest international organization after the United Nations, has officially recognized this day, he added.
