Planning Minister announces to launch ‘Adopt a District’ program 

Islamabad, September 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has announced to launch ‘Adopt a District’ program with the cooperation of provincial governments to lend a helping hand to the districts worst affected by the catastrophic flooding.

Briefing media persons in Islamabad on Tuesday, he said under this program, the administrative, human and health sector resources of major districts especially in Punjab which have not been damaged by the floods will be left at the disposal of those affected by the calamity. He said it is time to express complete compassion and solidarity with the people of flood affected districts and this will be a great service to this country.

Ahsan Iqbal said that two million mother and child nutrition packs will also be raised with the support of university students. He said Vice Chancellors of each university will task every student to prepare this nutrition pack individually or with the support of community to help those women and children whose lives are at stake in the flood hit areas.

He said the government is working to establish mobile clinics and maternity hospitals in the affected areas keeping in view the health needs of women there.

The Minister for Planning also appealed the religious scholars to encourage the people in their Friday Sermons to extend a helping hand to the flood victims.

In his remarks, Chairman National Disaster Management Authority Lieutenant General Akhtar Nawaz said Pakistan has so far received one hundred and fourteen relief flights from twenty countries. He mentioned that Turkiye is also sending relief trains to Pakistan. He said the relief goods sent by different countries include tents, tarpaulin, blankets, food packs, medicines and boats.

Lieutenant General Akhtar Nawaz said that Sindh is the most affected province, hence, fifty five to sixty percent relief goods have been sent to the province followed by fifteen to twenty percent to Balochistan. Relief goods have also been provided to Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit Baltistan.

He said that a complete record of relief goods is being maintained to ensure transparency. Coordinator National Flood Response and Coordination Center Major General Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said connectivity with Balochistan has been restored while trains are also plying on ML-1. He said provision of food to the flood affected areas is being ensured. He said the country has sufficient stocks of wheat and the government will take action against those involved in hoarding.

Muhammad Zafar Iqbal said that draining the water out of agriculture land in Sindh is continuing, expressing the confidence that most of the land there will be available for the cultivation of wheat crop. He said sunflower will be grown in the land where water will be standing.

PM to present Pakistan’s case on issues of immediate attention during UNGA session

Islamabad, September 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said he will present Pakistan’s case on issues of immediate attention during his address to the UN General Assembly session and bilateral meetings in New York. In a tweet today (Tuesday) after reaching New York, the Prime Minister said he will tell to the world Pakistan’s story of deep anguish and pain arising out of a massive human tragedy caused by floods.

Peaceful, prosperous Afghanistan priority for Pakistan: FM 

Islamabad, September 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has stressed that a peaceful, stable and prosperous Afghanistan is a priority for Pakistan.

Talking to the US Special Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West who called on him in New York, he emphasized the significance of continuing international engagement with the interim Afghan government for lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan and beyond.

The US Special Representative appreciated Pakistan’s efforts for peace and stability in Afghanistan and in facilitation of evacuations.

The two sides acknowledged the need for continued cooperation on the shared objectives of sustained efforts and engagement of the international community to alleviate sufferings of the Afghan people and promote regional peace and stability.

FM proposes creation of separate loss and damage financing window by int’l financial institutions 

Islamabad, September 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has proposed creation of a separate loss and damage financing window by the international financial institutions for generating an immediate response to climate induced natural disasters in the developing countries. He was chairing a high level event on Loss and Damage: New and Additional Financing organized by Pakistan on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly session in New York today.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that over the years, the developing countries have disproportionately suffered from the vagaries of climate change while contributing a miniscule amount to the Green House Gas Emissions. He expressed the hope that a decision would be reached for a financial mechanism to compensate developing countries for loss and damage. In his remarks, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry agreed that loss and damage is a reality that would need to be addressed at the upcoming Climate Change Conference.

Pakistan, Norway agree to further diversify cooperation

Islamabad, September 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):Pakistan and Norway have agreed to continue joint efforts to further strengthen and diversify cooperation particularly in trade, investment, development and other areas. The understanding came at a meeting between Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt in New York.

They underlined the importance of early conclusion of Free Trade Agreement between Pakistan and European Free Trade Association. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari hoped that more Norwegian companies would benefit from Pakistan’s attractive investment policy.

He underlined the importance of enhancing legal migration opportunities for Pakistanis. Bilawal Bhutto Zardari also underscored the need for peaceful resolution of Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolutions.

PM in New York to represent Pakistan at UNGA session

Islamabad, September 20, 2022 (PPI-OT):Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reached New York from London to represent Pakistan in the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During his stay in New York, he will have important bilateral meetings with the leaders of other countries. The Prime Minister will attend the reception of the Secretary General of the United Nations today and will also meet French President Emmanuel Macron.

Besides, Shehbaz Sharif will also hold meetings with Austrian Chancellor and Spanish President. He will meet the President of the European Union Council Charles Michael. The Prime Minister will also participate in the Global Food Security Summit. Shehbaz Sharif will meet Managing Director of International Monitory Fund Kristalina Georgieva and President World Bank David Mills tomorrow (Wednesday).

Apart from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Shehbaz Sharif will also have a bilateral meeting with Iran’s President Seyed Ibrahim Raisi. He will host a luncheon in honour of the President of Turkiye and his wife on Wednesday.

Other engagements of the Prime Minister include meetings with Malaysian Prime Minister Imail Sabri Yaaqob, President of the United Nations General Assembly, Microsoft founder Bill Gates, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai.

Shehbaz Sharif will also meet Prime Ministers of China, Japan and Luxemburg. The Prime Minister will address the UNGA on Friday. During his stay in the United States, Shehbaz Sharif will give interviews to various renowned American Media persons.
