Pakistani PhD student wins First Poster Award in Commonwealth Chemistry event

A Pakistani female Ph.D. student from the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi, has secured the first-ever inaugural people’s choice poster award at the prestigious ‘5th Commonwealth Chemistry Posters – Building Networks to Address the Goals’ virtual event.

According to a statement, competing among scholars from 28 countries, the student’s work was recognized for its significant contribution to advancing research aligned with global sustainability and development goals.

Commonwealth Chemistry and Federation of Chemical Sciences Societies UK conducted the virtual poster event in September 2024.

A Spokesman for the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi, said on Tuesday that Sanya Khursheed is pursuing her Ph.D. under the supervision of Dr. M. Imran Malik at the H.E.J. Research Institute.

He said that this year, over 180 abstracts from 28 countries were accepted for the 5th Commonwealth Chemistry Posters event in September. Sanya’s poster was titled ‘Electrochemical Detection of Creatinine at Picomolar Scale in Human Body Fluids for Diagnosis of Kidney Dysfunction.’

The winner who receives the most votes receives a cash prize of £200 and a certificate. Over 600 people voted for the first-ever People’s Choice Award winner.

Prof. Dr. Farzana Shaheen, the Director of the ICCBS, University of Karachi, congratulated the Ph.D. scholar and her supervisor Dr. Imran Malik for her achievement and said that our student’s achievement not only brings honor to the University of Karachi but also showcases the growing impact of Pakistani researchers on the global stage.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Karachi, Prof. Dr. Khalid Mehmood Iraqi, and Prof. Dr. Atta-ur Rahman, Professor Emeritus and former Federal Minister for Science and Technology also congratulated the Ph.D. student for her achievement.
