Diverting water from Indus will harm Sindh, say STP chief

Sindh Taraqi-Pasand Party (STP) chairman Dr Qadir Magsi said Wednesday that the people of Sindh had strongly responded to the call for today’s shutter-down strike against the proposed canal project on the Indus River.

Talking to media, Dr Magsi stated that the success of the strike sends a clear message to the government to immediately reject the canal project. He stated that the Indus River is the lifeline of Sindh, and diverting its waters for canal projects would lead to disastrous consequences for the Sindh province.

“We will not allow Sindh to be turned into a valley of death,” he warned. Dr Magsi described the strike as a public referendum against the canal project, asserting that Sindh had now awakened.

Despite the peaceful nature of the STP’s protest, Dr Magsi reported that the authorities attempted to reopen shops in several cities of Sindh but were unsuccessful.

He condemned the arrests of peaceful political activists, including STP’s Hyderabad district leader Irfan Brohi and eight other workers.
