Pakistan Champions Equitable Green Financing At Global Plastics Treaty Talks

Pakistan spearheaded discussions on fair green financing and a robust global plastics treaty during a pivotal meeting with several nations at the fifth Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee on Plastic Pollution (INC-5.2) in Geneva. Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, led the dialogue with representatives from Bangladesh, Egypt, Tajikistan, Malaysia, and Sudan.

The minister emphasized the disparity between the nations responsible for significant plastic consumption and those disproportionately affected by its consequences. Developed countries, often the largest consumers of plastic, also receive the lion”s share of green financing, while developing economies grapple with the environmental and socio-economic fallout of plastic waste.

Dr. Malik reaffirmed Pakistan”s dedication to advocating for just financial mechanisms, knowledge sharing, and skills development. He stressed the importance of directing aid to the countries most vulnerable to environmental and climate-related difficulties. The discussions aimed to forge a regional accord for an impactful and balanced Global Plastics Treaty.
