In a direct response to a concerning increase in suicide incidents, particularly within the desert belt districts and Dadu, the Government of Sindh has appointed a focal person to spearhead its Suicide Prevention Initiative (SPI).
According to a statement today, the Directorate of Human Rights, under the guidance of Rajvir Singh Sodha, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Human Rights, has named Ghulam Abass Khoso for the pro bono role. This measure reflects the provincial government’s growing concern over the rising number of cases in areas including Thar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, and Sanghar.
Mr. Khoso brings over eighteen years of professional experience to the position, with a background in Community Development, Social Mobilization, Inclusive Humanitarian Response, and Human Rights Advocacy through his work with leading national and international organizations.
In his new capacity, Mr. Khoso will act as a liaison between the Directorate and various governmental and non-governmental stakeholders. His mandate includes coordinating with district administration, law enforcement, and civil society organizations to identify and support vulnerable communities.
He is also tasked with facilitating awareness sessions, establishing counseling linkages, and promoting community dialogues aimed at reducing stigma and fostering mental well-being. Furthermore, he will provide periodic analytical and progress reports to the Directorate to aid in future policy formulation.
Speaking on the development, Mr. Rajvir Singh Sodha remarked, ‘Human life is sacred, and mental health is a collective responsibility. The Government of Sindh is committed to addressing the root causes of suicides through inclusive community engagement and compassionate human-rights-based approaches. This initiative is a step toward building hope, awareness, and institutional support at the grassroots level.’
Agha Fakhur Hussain, Director of the Directorate of Human Rights, commended Mr. Khoso’s voluntary commitment, stating that his expertise and dedication will strengthen the Government’s ongoing efforts to promote social well-being and safeguard human rights across Sindh.
