A coordinated raid by customs officials, supported by paramilitary and police forces, resulted in the seizure of smuggled goods and vehicles worth an estimated Rs252.5 million near District Hub, an operation marked by a public disturbance that allowed the bus drivers to flee the scene.
According to an official report on Wednesday, the major anti-smuggling operation was initiated by the Enforcement Collectorate Gadani based on credible intelligence received via the Chief Collector (Enforcement). A customs team was promptly dispatched to act on the information.
During an initial reconnaissance of the location near Ashok Pump, the enforcement unit assessed a significant potential for resistance and security risks, prompting a request for assistance from the Frontier Corps (FC) and local police to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the mission.
Upon arrival, the joint law enforcement contingent found the four suspected passenger buses parked as reported. As officials moved in to secure the vehicles, a mob assembled, creating disorder. In the ensuing scuffle, the drivers of all four buses managed to escape.
The situation was brought under control through the coordinated efforts of all present agencies. Due to the hostile atmosphere, the seized buses were immediately transported to the Customs Warehouse in Gadani.
A subsequent detailed examination, conducted in the presence of witnesses, led to the recovery of 30.5 metric tons of smuggled betel nuts of foreign origin. The four passenger buses, bearing registration numbers BSE-088, BSH-999, BSB-919, and BSB-613, were also officially impounded.
The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) stated it remains fully committed to curbing smuggling and corrupt practices to protect the national economy through sustained enforcement operations.
