The Sindh government has announced an urgent initiative to evacuate and demolish hundreds of buildings identified as extremely dangerous across Karachi, vowing to provide safe accommodation to residents of buildings that have been declared unsafe or demolished in Karachi
In a formal statement, Sharjeel Inam Memon, the Senior Minister of Sindh who also holds the portfolio for Information, Transport, and Mass Transit, confirmed the administration’s resolve to implement priority measures. He emphasised that the primary objective is to guarantee safe new homes for the affected citizens.
The minister articulated the government’s commitment to the immediate evacuation of all unsafe structures. Under the new directive, buildings that have already been vacated will be razed, with firm assurances provided for the complete rehabilitation of the former occupants.
Providing an update on the situation, Mr Memon disclosed that Assistant Commissioners had concluded their assessments of 471 out of a total of 588 buildings designated as extremely hazardous within the metropolitan area.
The provincial authorities will give precedence to rehousing residents from 59 buildings that have already been cleared. The government further pledged to construct new flats specifically for these displaced families.
The minister also announced that this public safety initiative would be extended beyond the capital. Corresponding surveys to identify structurally unsound buildings are scheduled to be carried out in Hyderabad, Sukkur, and other major urban centres throughout the province.
