Advocate Demands Judicial Probe into Plaza Catastrophe

Families impacted by the Gul Plaza catastrophe are reportedly still searching for missing relatives in the absence of effective government measures, says a senior lawyer who has labelled the incident the worst example of government negligence.

Advocate Hasnain Ali Chohan, a senior leader of the Insaf Lawyers Forum Karachi, asserted today that those accountable for the disastrous event must be swiftly identified. He underscored that justice for the victims must be a prerequisite for any reconciliation, affirming his organisation”s unwavering support for those affected.

The senior lawyer called for an impartial judicial inquiry into the mishap, stating it was essential to reveal the full facts to the public. He demanded the immediate suspension of any officials implicated in the incident or found guilty of dereliction of duty, insisting that criminal cases be filed against them.

Chohan further criticised the widespread issue of illegal construction and deficient fire safety protocols in the city, describing the situation as “playing with human lives.” He argued that establishing committees alone is an insufficient response, calling instead for decisive action and exemplary punishment for the responsible parties to prevent future tragedies.

He urged the authorities to guarantee the stringent enforcement of building and fire safety regulations to avert similar disasters. Additionally, he called for immediate relief and compensation for the victims, reaffirming the Insaf Lawyers Forum”s commitment to defending the legal rights of the affected families across all available platforms.
