Yellow Line BRT cost reaches $620 million, completion date extended to 2028

The Sindh cabinet on Tuesday approved a significant revision in the cost of the Karachi Mobility Project’s BRT Yellow Line, increasing its total budget to $620 million and extending the completion deadline to December 2028.

To finance the increased expenditure, the World Bank will provide an additional $155.3 million, while the provincial government will contribute a further $18.04 million to the project’s funding.

The substantial cost increase has been attributed to several factors, including a general rise in prices since 2019. The revised budget also incorporates the inclusion of a fleet of electric buses and their necessary charging facilities, as well as an expanded scope for the construction of associated flyovers and underpasses.

The 21-kilometer BRT Yellow Line is a major public transportation project. The Chief Minister of Sindh has directed the Transport Department to ensure the project is finalized by the new target of December 2028.

During the same meeting, the progress of the BRT Red Line project was also reviewed. The Chief Minister has set a separate target of June 2026 for its completion.

In other related matters, the cabinet approved Rs 300 million for the acquisition of land from PTCL required for the Malir Depot. It was also reported that K-Electric has assured that the utility shifting work for the transport schemes will be completed by February 2026.
