New SMIU Students Urged to Uphold Public Trust Amid 75% State Subsidy on Fees

The Vice Chancellor of Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) issued a compelling reminder to the new student intake that their education represents a significant public investment, with the state subsidising nearly 75% of the cost. During an orientation event for the Spring 2026 semester, he stressed that admission to a public sector university is both a privilege and a profound responsibility, urging the incoming cohort to honour this trust through academic diligence and ethical conduct.

The orientation, organised by the Department of Admissions and Examinations at the Shahnawaz Auditorium on Tuesday, was designed to welcome the newly admitted individuals and familiarise them with the historic institution”s academic framework, policies, and student support systems.

In his address, the Vice Chancellor contrasted the contemporary educational landscape with the challenges of previous decades, which were marked by limited opportunities and delayed communication. He noted that today”s students benefit from instant access to information and structured academic systems, and called on them to leverage these advantages wisely, avoiding complacency.

He underscored that the attendees are now part of an institution founded in 1885 by Hassanally Effendi, a place where history and responsibility converge. The Vice Chancellor advised the new intake to engage in honest self-assessment regarding their chosen disciplines and to commit fully to their four-year academic journey, stating that clear direction transforms students into productive graduates.

Concluding his remarks, the Vice Chancellor reaffirmed that students are the core of the institution and expressed his confidence in their potential. He encouraged them to become proud, responsible, and service-oriented graduates who would make their parents, teachers, and the nation proud.

Throughout the event, deans and departmental chairpersons, including Dr. Jamshed Halepoto, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Khan, and Dr. Stephen John, briefed the attendees on SMIU”s vision. They emphasised academic excellence, ethical leadership, and research-driven learning aligned with national development goals.

Key academic dates for the Spring 2026 semester were announced. Classes are scheduled to commence on 9th February, with the course drop deadline set for 23rd February. Mid-term examinations will run from 6th to 12th April, and final examinations are slated for 8th to 14th June, with results to be declared on 22nd June.

Students were informed that SMIU comprises six faculties, including Information Technology, Management, Social Sciences, Sciences, Education, and Law, offering a wide range of multidisciplinary academic programmes. All courses are fully aligned with Higher Education Commission (HEC) standards, combining theoretical knowledge with practical training.

The role of the Accreditation and Quality Enhancement Cell (AQEC) was also highlighted, along with the importance of mandatory feedback surveys. Guidance was provided on using the university”s digital platforms, such as CMS, LMS, and SAMS, for academic and administrative tasks.

Further sessions covered student welfare services, including scholarships, financial aid, transport, and extracurricular opportunities through student societies and the SMIU Student Council. The university”s commitment to ethics, discipline, and its Anti-Drug and Tobacco Policy was also clearly communicated.
