Approximately 80,000 to 100,000 children in Sindh are affected by Down Syndrome

Approximately 80,000 to 100,000 children in Sindh are affected by Down Syndrome, said Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah today as he inaugurated the Hyderabad Chapter of the Karachi Down Syndrome Program (KDSP), which is a significant initiative. The Hyderabad Chapter was officially inaugurated with the aim to provide crucial support. More than 100 special individuals have already been registered at the new center, which will provide comprehensive education, rehabilitation, and welfare services.

Provincial Minister Jam Khan Shoro and Hyderabad Mayor Kashif Shoro were also present with the Chief Minister during the inauguration. This institution marks an effort by the Sindh government’s Department for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities.

Mr. Shah emphasized that for the education, rehabilitation, and welfare of children with Down Syndrome, the Hyderabad center represents a significant achievement. He informed that the Down Syndrome Program is already actively working in Karachi’s PECHS and North Nazimabad areas.

The Hyderabad Chapter will provide important facilities free of charge, including physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and behavioral therapy. According to statistics shared by the Chief Minister, one in every 700 children is affected by Down Syndrome.

Mr. Shah emphasized that specialized centers play an effective role in the timely diagnosis, rehabilitation, and social inclusion of affected children. He also revealed that an advanced digital application is being developed in collaboration with DEPD and KDSP. This modern app, designed for both Android and iPhone platforms, will enable parents in rural areas to receive therapy sessions and medical guidance from their homes.

Looking ahead, the Sindh government is committed to establishing similar facilities in Sukkur and Shaheed Benazirabad. The Chief Minister reiterated his administration’s commitment for the timely completion of such projects and for the overall welfare of individuals with special needs.

During his visit to the KDSP Hyderabad Center, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah reviewed the facilities available for children and expressed his satisfaction. DEPD Secretary Taha Farooqui, along with KDSP representatives Ali Ullahwala and Tabish Shehzad, briefed the Chief Minister about the center’s operations and facilities.
