Pakistan today conveyed its apprehension regarding the suggested alterations to both the mandate and operational structure of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The nation particularly cautioned against a reduction in troop numbers, citing the deteriorating security climate.
These reservations were articulated by Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations. His statement came as Pakistan cast its vote in favour of the UN Security Council resolution that extended the mission”s mandate.
Ambassador Jadoon contended that the proposed decrease of the troop ceiling to 12,500 personnel lacked justification, given the escalating political instability and security challenges currently plaguing South Sudan.
He underscored that UNMISS continues to shoulder significant duties, notably the safeguarding of non-combatants and facilitating aid delivery across a vast geographical expanse. Such crucial responsibilities, he emphasised, necessitate a strong and enduring international presence.
