The recovery of over 16 tonnes of solid waste from Karachi Port’s high-risk harbour areas has highlighted Pakistan’s resolve to maintain a clean and sustainable maritime environment, with officials stressing the crucial link between pollution-free ports and national economic growth. This significant clean-up operation by the Karachi Port Trust”s (KPT) Marine Pollution Control Department (MPCD) targeted threats to marine ecosystems and safe navigation.
Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, today reaffirmed the government’s commitment to these objectives, emphasising that clean ports are indispensable for both secure navigation and economic advancement.
The recent weekly drive by the KPT”s MPCD successfully retrieved 16,430 kilogrammes of refuse. This included plastic debris, floating garbage, organic waste, and discarded fishing apparatus, all identified as significant dangers to marine life, port operations, and coastal biodiversity.
Operations were concentrated in critical zones such as the dumping and transfer site, East Wharf, West Wharf, and Boat Basin Jetty. These areas face heightened pollution risks due to substantial vessel traffic, cargo handling activities, and urban runoff. The extensive effort involved 54 boat deployments and 164 personnel operating in shifts to ensure comprehensive coverage.
Mr Chaudhry confirmed that all collected refuse was safely transported to the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board”s Garbage Transfer Station for environmentally compliant disposal. He underscored the importance of adhering to safety protocols to avert secondary contamination. The minister further remarked that sustained port cleanliness significantly improves vessel turnaround times, diminishes operational hazards, and facilitates efficient trade.
The minister commended Admiral Shahid Ahmed”s leadership and revealed plans for future enhancements, including the acquisition of modern waste-collection equipment and advanced monitoring systems. These initiatives demonstrate KPT”s proactive approach to environmental protection, aligning with Pakistan”s broader sustainable maritime objectives and international commitments.
“We remain dedicated to safeguarding marine life, navigational safety, and fostering a cleaner harbour through robust stakeholder cooperation and public awareness campaigns,” the minister affirmed, reiterating the government”s unwavering resolve.
