Karachi: Meta has introduced new AI-powered age assurance measures across its platforms in Pakistan to strengthen online safety for teenagers. The initiative expands protections already available through Teen Accounts on Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger, where teens are automatically placed into age-appropriate experiences with stricter privacy and content controls.
According to Meta, the company is enhancing its age verification technology to better identify users who may be underage, even if they provide inaccurate birth dates. Meta's updated system uses AI to analyze profile activity, including posts, captions, comments, and other contextual clues such as school references or birthday celebrations.
Meta is also introducing AI-driven visual analysis to help detect underage accounts by assessing general visual indicators of age in photos and videos. The company clarified that the technology is not facial recognition and does not identify individuals, but instead estimates age ranges using broad visual cues.
Accounts identified as potentially underage may be deactivated until users complete an age verification process. Meta is also simplifying reporting tools for underage accounts and using AI-assisted moderation to improve the speed and accuracy of reviews.
The company said some of the advanced AI features, including visual analysis, are currently available only in select countries as part of a phased global rollout.
Meta further reiterated its support for legislation requiring app stores to handle age verification centrally, arguing that a unified system would provide more consistent and privacy-focused protections for teens across apps.
