In a seminar that brought together political leaders from various parties, the urgent concern regarding effective governance of urban areas was highlighted. This event was organized under the auspices of the Platform of Empowered People today, with the participation of prominent figures such as former federal minister Asad Umar, MQM’s Dr. Farooq Sattar, and PTI’s Firdous Shamim Naqvi.
The seminar provided an opportunity for Functional League’s Secretary General, Sardar Abdul Rahim, to discuss the critical need for managing cities as organized units. He highlighted the complexities arising from the incomplete interpretation of Article 140-A of the Constitution, which pertains to the transfer of powers to local governments.
Rahim shed light on the challenges that arise when provincial authorities dominate local bodies, rendering mayors powerless and halting urban development. He advocated for a strong local government system to effectively address urban challenges.
The discussion was based on real experiences, highlighting the structural issues of urban governance. Rahim appreciated the seminar’s role in public awareness and the importance of such forums in favor of strong local governance.
He commended Asad Umar and his team for organizing the seminar and pledged his continued participation in future discussions.
