Sindh mourns the passing of prominent irrigation engineer and water expert Ubhayo Khushk in Karachi today due to a liver disease. His death is considered a great loss for the region, where his voice was significant on issues of water rights and resources.

Ubhayo Khushk has made outstanding contributions to the discussion of water management in Sindh. As a former Superintending Engineer of the Irrigation Department, he was regarded as an authority on issues concerning the Indus River’s water. His literary work, which includes more than five books in Sindhi, Urdu, and English, addresses significant topics such as Sindh’s water rights and the broader impact of hydro-politics. Notable titles include “Sindhu Jo Rasto Na Rokiyo” and “Save the Indus River.”

In his lifetime, Khushk was a strong advocate for Sindh, consistently presenting the region’s stance on national and international platforms. His efforts have left an indelible mark on the struggle for fair water distribution between Sindh and Punjab.

The news of his passing has sparked widespread grief in political, literary, and social circles. Former Senator Sassui Palijo highlighted his tireless struggle for Sindh’s water rights, stating that it would be difficult to replace such a dedicated expert. Other figures, including Zain Shah and Riaz Chandio, have also offered their condolences.

Khushk’s funeral prayers will be held in the Kashigar neighborhood of Thatta, and he will be buried in the historic Pir Patho Cemetery. To pay tribute to his legacy, academic and political organizations in Thatta have announced three days of mourning.

As Sindh copes with the loss of another significant figure in water advocacy, the challenge remains to continue his work to protect the region’s water resources.
