Pakistan’s strong response to Indian remarks on Kashmir dispute at the United Nations

Pakistan today gave a strong response to comments made by an Indian representative during the General Assembly debate at the United Nations, which focused on the longstanding and contentious issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

Gul Qaiser Sarwani, Pakistan’s Counselor and Political Coordinator, spoke to challenge the claims made by the Indian delegation, which were in reference to the annual report of the Security Council. Sarwani highlighted that Pakistan’s contribution to the preparatory section of the report was widely acknowledged by other delegations. However, he noted that the Indian representative focused solely on the elements related to the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, as listed in the report.

Sarwani emphasized that during the reporting period, the Security Council received over twenty communications related to the India-Pakistan issue. Specifically, the Council held closed consultations that reviewed the regional security dynamics and the escalating tensions due to India’s actions.

Rejecting India’s claims, Sarwani appealed to their representative to read the report carefully and refrain from distorting facts. He reiterated that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized dispute under the purview of the Security Council, with historical and legal dimensions that India cannot alter through misrepresentation.

He stressed that even after nearly seventy-six years, due to Security Council resolutions advocating a plebiscite, the Kashmiri people have been deprived of their right to self-determination. Sarwani also highlighted the ongoing human rights violations in the region, reflected in the joint communication of the United Nations Special Procedures on October 16, 2025.

Sarwani accused India of neglecting its responsibilities under the United Nations Charter, as it has not implemented the Security Council resolutions on Kashmir. He noted that several delegations in the debate emphasized the importance of adhering to these resolutions.

In his speech, Sarwani criticized India for attempting to divert attention from its controversial actions, which include sponsoring terrorism in Pakistan, state terrorism in Indian-administered Kashmir, and other violations of international law.

The debate at the United Nations highlighted the ongoing complexities and tensions related to the issue of Jammu and Kashmir, where both Pakistan and India remain steadfast in their respective positions.
