The United Nations Secretary-General has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in the Middle East and appealed to the relevant parties to halt aggression and consider diplomatic avenues.
In a statement issued today by Secretary-General’s spokesperson, Farhan Haq, there is an emphasis on the immediate cessation of attacks. The UN chief is particularly worried about recent developments in Lebanon, Iran, and Gaza, and advocates for adherence to the existing ceasefires.
Increasing concerns, the Secretary-General criticized Israel’s decision to close border crossings in Gaza. He emphasized the need to reopen these crossings to enable the swift and safe delivery of humanitarian aid in the area.
Maritime navigation rights under international law should also be maintained, the Secretary-General stressed, insisting on adherence to these principles to avoid further instability.
In his address, the Secretary-General reiterated that the conflicts in the Middle East cannot be resolved through military means. He encouraged all groups to engage in negotiations and dialogue, according to him, these are the only viable paths to achieving sustainable peace and security in the region.
