Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar has said that every child has the right to education, protection, dignity, and the opportunity to realise his or her full potential, stressing that child labour deprives children of these fundamental rights and undermines their prospects for a secure future.
In a message issued on the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour today, the minister said that despite ongoing efforts, many children remain vulnerable to exploitation and are denied opportunities to learn, develop, and achieve their full potential. He emphasised that protecting children from labour that threatens their well-being is essential for building a just, inclusive, and prosperous society.
Tarar said that the Constitution of Pakistan provides important safeguards for children. He noted that Article 11 prohibits the employment of children in hazardous occupations, while Article 25-A guarantees free and compulsory education. He added that Pakistan has further strengthened its commitment to combating child labour through the ratification of ILO Conventions No. 138 and No. 182.
The minister said that the government continues to strengthen child protection systems, expand access to education, and support vulnerable families through social protection initiatives. However, he stressed that the elimination of child labour requires the collective efforts of government institutions, communities, employers, civil society organisations, parents, and educators.
Calling for renewed commitment on the World Day Against Child Labour, Tarar urged all stakeholders to work together to build a Pakistan where every child is safe, educated, and empowered to contribute meaningfully to society. He said that protecting children from exploitation is both a legal responsibility and a moral obligation.
