Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today expressed the confidence that modernization of Pakistan Railways’ infrastructure would be instrumental in positioning Pakistan as a regional trade and logistics hub.
This he said while chairing a review meeting on the implementation of transformation plan of Pakistan Railways in Islamabad today. The meeting was briefed on the progress of the ML-1 and ML-3 upgradation projects, Thar Coal railway connectivity and other development initiatives.
The Prime Minister said Pakistan Railways is the most cost-effective and efficient mode of transportation for both passengers and freight.
He further said that a modern and efficient railway system would play a vital role in strengthening the country’s economy, promoting trade and enhancing regional connectivity. Sharif also directed the authorities to complete Pakistan Railways’ development projects within the stipulated timelines while ensuring the highest standards of quality.
He further instructed to submit proposals regarding the upgradation of the Rohri-Multan section of Main Line-1 (ML-1). It was informed that the detailed engineering design for the Karachi-Rohri section of ML-1 has been completed, while the upgradation of the Rohri-Nokundi section of ML-3 will be undertaken under the Public Sector Development Programme and bridge financing arrangements.
The meeting was further apprised that around sixty percent work has been completed on the 112-kilometre railway track linking the Thar Coal fields with Chhor Railway Station, and the project is expected to be completed by December this year.
The meeting was told that on the Prime Minister’s directives, the services of an international consultant have been engaged to implement railway sector reforms.
It was said the services of schools and hospitals operated by Pakistan Railways had been outsourced, while work was being initiated on the commercialization of six major railway stations.
