Allegations Regarding Language Bill by Afaq Ahmed Are Baseless: Amir Bux Bhutto

Sardar Amir Bux Khan Bhutto strongly refuted the allegations made by MQM-Haqiqi leader, Afaq Ahmed, concerning the Sindhi Language Bill. Ahmed, in a press conference on July 13, 2025, had claimed that the law, enacted during Mumtaz Bhutto’s government, created a lasting divide between rural and urban Sindh.

Bhutto retorted that Ahmed’s claim was utterly false, arguing that the bill merely acknowledged an existing reality. He posed a rhetorical question: If Sindhi were not declared the official language of Sindh, would the languages of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, or Bihar have been chosen? He asserted that the perceived divide isn’t a consequence of the Sindhi Language Bill, but rather stems from the continued reluctance of migrants from India, who were given refuge in Sindh, to fully embrace their new homeland and their persistent attachment to their native places. He cited opposition to the Ajrak design on license plates as an example.

Bhutto placed the blame for animosity in Sindh not on the Sindhi Language Bill but on those who “sent bodies packed in sacks to Sindh.” He criticized those who, after being given refuge, are now allegedly plotting the division of the province and making Karachi a separate capital, along with spreading negative propaganda against Sindhis. He sarcastically suggested “paan” or “supari” as alternative license plate designs instead of Ajrak. He concluded his statement by emphasizing the responsibility of every Sindhi to protect the province’s heritage and culture.
