A sensational six-wicket haul from paceman Shaquan Belle, complemented by a powerful century from Zachary Carter, propelled the West Indies to a commanding victory over South Africa, solidifying their status as strong contenders heading into the Super Six stage of the U19 World Cup.
According to a report by ICC on Friday, the Caribbean outfit successfully defended their total of 234, dismissing the entire South African batting lineup for 179 in under 39 overs to secure a crucial win.
Zachary Carter was instrumental in the first innings, providing the bulk of the runs with a formidable knock of 114 from just 104 deliveries, an innings that included eight fours and eight sixes.
Belle was the standout performer with the ball, delivering remarkable figures of 6/40 from his 10 overs. He received effective support from his fellow bowlers, with Jakeem Pollard taking 1/19, Isra-El Morton claiming 1/27, and Vitel Lawes contributing with 1/60.
Reflecting on the comprehensive bowling display, Pollard credited the collective effort of the unit. “It was a good bowling performance from the boys (and what made the performance special was that) we bowled in partnerships,” he said.
Pollard also noted his long-standing connection with the day”s chief destroyer, adding, “It”s great (to be a part of that bowling attack), because I grew up with Shaquon.”
With their place in the next round secured, the team”s ambitions are set high. “The main focus (now) is to get through to the semi-finals and I think that if the fellas work hard, we will come out on top,” Pollard stated.
For the bowler, the tournament represents a significant personal milestone. (This is) my first time playing in the World Cup (and) it would be very good to represent not only Barbados, but the whole Caribbean.
The West Indies will commence their Super Six campaign with a clash against Ireland on Sunday in Windhoek.
