Brace for massive unemployment, warns UNISAME

Karachi:The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has invited the attention of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) to the fact that many Pakistanis will lose their jobs both in and outside the country due to the economic crisis because of the pandemic and urged SMEDA to be prepared to offer best self-employment options according to the experience, aptitude and available funds with each applicant.

President UNISAME Zulfikar Thaver said in order to generate income to survive in the absence of employment opportunities, many persons with skill, experience and zest to do business will opt to become entrepreneurs and SMEDA in this situation must be ready with current and valid feasibility of various businesses to guide the prospective entrepreneurs.

He said there are many small and medium sized businesses which can generate sufficient income with very low risk of failure provided done diligently under proper guidance. Thaver said the startups need to be accommodated with access to finance, facilities under pay as you earn schemes for business premises, equipment, raw material, marketing and technical support.

UNISAME experts apprehend a big influx of overseas Pakistanis returning home jobless and looking for small to medium sized businesses at home as job opportunities would become equally bad in Pakistan. In such a situation SMEDA needs to be ready with at least 100 feasibility plans of micro to medium sized units. Thaver also urged State Bank of Pakistan to revisit his proposal of franchise financing to accommodate the jobless and create opportunities for the prospective entrepreneurs on modern lines.
