Water supply slightly halted after power breakdown at Dhabeji

KARACHI:The supply of water to Karachi was slightly suspended after a power breakdown at the Dhabeji Pumping Station in the wee hours of Saturday.

Pumping of water to the city has been suspended for hours on Saturday owing to a major electricity breakdown.

According to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB), the 72-inch pipe burst due to the backlog of water when the power supply to the station was suspended.

The impact of the short supply of water would be felt in different areas of the metropolis, including Landhi, Korangi, Shah Lateef Town, Quaidabad, Gulshan, Malir, and some other parts.

The KWSB officials said it would take at least 8 to 10 hours to get the water pumps functional at their normal capacity again. The board has asked people to conserve water and not to waste it. The official said that over 20 million gallons of water was supplied to the city.

Isolation Wards in KMC hospitals for Congo patients

KARACHI:On directives of Senior Director Medical and Health Services Department Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) isolation wards have been established in four major health facilities to cater deadly Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) infected patients.

The isolation wards have been setup in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, Landhi Medical Complex, Gazdarabad General Hospital and Sarfaraz Rafiqui Shaheed (SRS) Hospital.

The heads, focal persons and medical staff of KMC hospitals have been instructed to take preventive measures during Eid Ul Azha days. They have further directed to take adequate precautions while treating patients exposed to domestic animals or meat handlers and must observe infection control procedures.

The medical superintendents and doctors of KMC hospitals have been advised to provide health education to the general public for awareness, place banners/posters on prominent places.

The Congo fever is a fatal viral disease that spread through a tick (Cheechar) bite, which is a parasite lives in the blood of animals. The Congo mainly contracted people who deal with cattle and livestock.

The symptoms of Congo virus include backache, joints pain, pain in the abdomen, high fever and bleeding from any part of the body.

According to the health department, eight CCHF positive patients had been brought to Karachi’s public and private hospitals out of which five expired while three were recovered from fever.

PTI MPA moves court for release of dues

KARACHI:Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader and Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA), Khurram Sherzaman has filed a petition seeking issuance of dues of their salaries and allowances of assembly members.

The petitioner, in his petition, said that according to the 2017 Act, salaries and other allowances of assembly members were increased members are still not being given their allowances as per the Act.

Khurram Sherzaman said that Sindh government was not releasing due of more than Rs60 crores. He pleaded the court to issue orders for the release of dues to assembly members.

The Chief Minister of Sindh, Chief Secretary, Minister of Law and Sindh Assembly Speaker were made respondents in the petition.

Police arrest five drug peddlers

KARACHI:Zaman town police on Saturday claimed to have arrested five drug peddlers for smuggling narcotics in Karachi’s Zaman area.

According to police, on a tip-off, police conducted an operation in the area and detained five suspects. Police said that the suspects were booked in a number of cases. They also recovered weapons and drug from their possession.

ICCBS: Interview test of MPhil, and PhD candidates on Monday

KARACHI:International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University of Karachi (UoK) has announced that the synopsis and research proposal writing and interview sessions of successful MPhil and PhD candidates, seeking admissions to the ICCBS MPhil and PhD Admission Programme-2019, will be held on July 22 (Monday) at the international center.

An official of the ICCBS on Saturday said that the synopsis and research proposal writing session of all disciplines will be held at 08:30 in the morning at the Salimuzzaman Siddiqui Auditorium, ICCBS.

He said that interview sessions of different disciplines will be held after the writing session in different buildings of the center.

He maintained that interview session for Organic Chemistry will be conducted at 09:30am at the H.E.J. Meeting Room, while interview session for Analytical Chemistry at 09:30am at L.E.J. Lecture Hall-B, for Bio-Organic Chemistry at 09:30am at L.E.J. Lecture Hall-A, for Molecular Medicine at 09:30am at PCMD Board Room, and interview session for Pharmacology will be conducted at 10:30am at L.E.J. Meeting Room.

He said that the final merit list of successful candidates will be displayed on July 31 at the University of Karachi’s official website. The official said that the successful students will be given admissions to the Dr. Panjwani Center for Molecular Medicine and Drug Research and H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry.

IGP takes notice of cop’s murder

KARACHI:Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Dr Syed Kaleem Imam on Saturday took a notice of a police sub-inspector’s murder, who was shot dead by an unidentified armed robbers during robbery in SITE Superhighway.

The IGP has sought an inquiry report into the incident from SSP Malir. He also directed early arrest of culprits involved in the killing of police official.

Earlier, two armed robbers riding a motorbike intercepted a 50-year-old Ghulam Qadir, son of Abdul Jabbar, in SITE Superhighway, but he offered them resistance on which the robbers opened fire on him. As a result, he suffered severe bullet injuries and died on the spot.

The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

Operation to stop water theft

KARACHI:On the instruction of Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah the irrigation department has launched operation against illegal outlets, so that water could be distributed properly up to the tail-end.

Chief Engineer Right Bank Canals, Larkana Saeed Jagirani in his report to the chief minister said that he has started operation against illegal modules, tempering of outlets because several channels were not getting their water share.

The district administration, police and Rangers have given full support and cooperation to the Irrigation Department in this operation.

In the first phase all illegal modules and outlets of Saifullah Canal, Dhamraho Canal were removed and water was released into channels which had turned dry due to water theft.

A similar operation was also carried out at Khirthar Canal and Warah Canal and then Dadu Canal and Mehar Branch.
