Punjab University VC indicted in Dr Maria defamation case

LAHORE:A local court in Lahore on Saturday indicted Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Niaz Ahmed Akhter in the defamation case filed by former director of the PU Confucius Center Dr Maria Isabel Maldonado Garcia.

Dr Maria is a Spanish national who approached the court against the expulsion from PU Confucius Center on alleged charges of corruption levelled by PU VC Dr Niaz and later circulated the termination letter to all the universities throughout the country. Additional Sessions Judge Jahanzeb Chattha heard the case and indicted the PU VC in the defamation case.

PU VC Prof Niaz appeared before the court, though his counsel had already submitted the surety bonds for the bail. The District and Sessions Court Lahore adjourned the case hearing till January 29 after summoning the witnesses in the case.

Agencies claim arresting two alleged facilitators of Lahore blast

LAHORE:The law-enforcement agencies on Friday claimed to have arrested two alleged facilitators of the Lahore bomb blast. The security personnel arrested the two facilitators from the Ravi Road area of the city this morning.

According to sources, the arrested facilitators have now been shifted to an unknown place for further interrogation. The security personnel nabbed with the help of the CCTV footage obtained from the area.

Earlier, the investigators send the pictures of the alleged terrorists to NADRA for identification after completing the geo-fencing of the area. Furthermore, in an important development in Lahore’s Anarkali Bazaar bomb blast, the authorities managed to obtain CCTV footage of the alleged terrorists and their facilitators doing recce of the bazaar.

Sindh to build shelter homes for senior citizens

LAHORE:The Sindh government on Friday announced its plans to build shelter homes for senior citizens in 13 districts of the province.

All senior citizens with 60 years and above age group would be eligible for staying at the shelter homes where they will be provided with basic facilities.

The Sindh government has also allocated land for shelter homes in the 13 districts which are West, Korangi, Keamari, Hyderabad, Badin, Matiari, Naushero Feroz, Larkana, Qambar-Shahdatkot, Tando Allah Yar, Thatta and Umerkot. The construction work will start this June, however, the homes will be completed in 2023.

LAHORE:Met office has informed that on Saturday, rain wind-thunderstorm with snow over the hills (with few heavy falls/hailstorm) is expected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, north Balochistan, Gilgit Baltistan and Kashmir. Fog is likely to prevail in upper Sindh and plain areas of Punjab during night and morning hours.

Two killed, 28 injured in Lahore blast

LAHORE:Two people were killed and 28 others injured in a blast near Lahore’s Anarkali Bazaar area on Thursday.

The blast from improvised explosive device (IED) created panic in the areas windows of nearby shops and buildings were shattered by the explosion. The vehicles parked near the blast site were also damaged. The rescue teams reached spot of incident and shifted the injured to Mayo Hospital. Police said that around 1.5 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast. It was further learnt that the explosives were placed on ground between motorcycles.

Preliminary report said that the blast took place at 1:40pm and razed a building and destroyed eight motorcycles. Talking to media persons, DIG operations said that police teams are collecting evidence from the place of incident and soon the details of the blast will be confirmed.

Mayo Hospital officials said four people are in critical condition, with the doctors trying to save their lives. The medics have given first aid to other injured people. Chief Minister of Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar took notice of the blast and sought report from Inspector General (IG) Punjab.

Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan condemned the blast at New Anarkali in Lahore. The premier, while taking notice of the explosion, has directed the concerned authorities to arrest the responsible people as soon as possible. He further extended condolences to the bereaved families of the explosion victims.

President of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Mian Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over loss of precious human lives in Lahore blast and said that poor and minors were affected by the blast which is strongly condemnable.

Preliminary investigation report of Lahore blast presented before Punjab CM

LAHORE:The preliminary investigation report of the Lahore bomb blast which took place in Anarkali area was submitted to the Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Usman Buzdar here on Thursday.

As per the reports presented to Punjab CM, the blast exploded from a planted device. A 1.5 kg of explosive material was used in the blast. The blast took place in Lohari Chowk. According to the initial reports, the blast damaged the building and eight motorcycles, injuring 29 people and killing two. The dead included Ramzan and Absaar. The blast occurred at 1:40 PM and at 1:44 PM an unknown person made a call to convey that the blast had taken place in New Anarkali.

As per the reports, the administration including Lahore police reached immediately. Police, forensic and intelligence agencies are on the scene. CCTV cameras are being used to find out who planted the explosives, and the injured are being given the best medical care. Immediately after the blast, an emergency was declared in all the hospitals across Lahore and medical aid is being provided to the injured. Some suspects have been arrested and are being investigated.

Murree tragedy probe: 15 officers including Commissioner, DC, AC suspended

LAHORE:Inquiry report on the Murree tragedy has been submitted to Chief Minister Punjab Sardar Usman Buzdar and 15 officers have been removed from their posts. These include Commissioner Rawalpindi Division, Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi, CPO, AC Murree and others.

The CM told in the press conference that action is being taken by removing 15 officers from their posts in the light of recommendations of the inquiry committee. He said the Commissioner Rawalpindi division has been removed from his post and sent to the federal government and it was also recommended to suspend them. DC Rawalpindi is also removed and his services have been handed over to the federal government.

It has been recommended to suspend him and disciplinary action be taken against him, he stated. CM Buzdar said AC Murree has been suspended and disciplinary action has been ordered against him. ASP Murree has been removed from his post and his services have also been handed over to the federal government. It has been recommended to suspend him and disciplinary action be taken against him.

CTO Rawalpindi, DSP Traffic, SE Highways Circle-2 Rawalpindi, XEN Highway Rawalpindi, XEN Highway Mechanical Rawalpindi, SDO Highway Mechanical Murree, Divisional Forest Officer Murree, District Emergency Officer Murree, Incharge Murree Rescue 1122 and Director PDMA Punjab have also been suspended and disciplinary action has been ordered against them, the Chief Minister added.

Chief Minister Usman Buzdar said the tragedy that took place in Murree was sad and extremely painful in all respects. He said that this is a great tragedy and a high-level inquiry committee headed by Additional Chief Secretary (Home) was constituted to determine the causes and those responsible for this mishap. The Chief Minister said that he himself had gone there to review the situation.
