Acid injuries rising in children

KARACHI:Eminent Plastic Surgeon and Head of Burns Center, Karachi, Dr Ehmer-Al-Ibran has said that acid injuries in children are increasing in Sindh province, as well as, in Pakistan as citric acid is being sold in cold drink bottles and authorities concerned have failed to stop the selling of acid in open market.

Talking to PPI, Dr Ehmer Ibran explained that the acid-related attacks were common in females and males but now acid injuries are also being reported in children due to unsafe storage and unnecessary use of such products in homes.

He said acid is being used for cleaning toilets but sometime it becomes harmful for users particularly children if such products are not used or stored sensibly.

“Acid is being sold in cold drink bottles in markets and its open sell has resulted in increase in burns incidence to innocent children. He said some child patients are being rushed to the Burns Units with complaints that children drank the acid mistakenly by thinking it was a cold drink,” he added.

He said acid is not only harmful for people using it unsafely but it also damages the sewerage pipe lines.

He said an incident was reported in Shikarpur district a few days ago where a youngster Abdul Rasheed accidently received acid burn injuries when a small bottle of acid suddenly fell from a shelf over him while he was sleeping.

He said the youngster was badly injured and shifted to Burns Centre Karachi from Sikharpur after getting initial treatment from a local hospital of Sukkur.

He said the condition of patient is gradually improving but such incidents should be eye-opener for the families who use dangerous acids in causal manner. He asked them to adopt preventive measures to save their children.

He said an acid victim should be washed gently for an hour and then shifted to a nearby hospital for proper treatment.

Dr Ehmer said burn-related injuries and deaths can be reduced at homes as well as at workplace by implementing laws. He said acid should be sold only to people who show a valid identity card, in order to reduce acid-related attacks, injuries and deaths.

He demanded of the federal and provincial governments to regulate selling of acid on urgent basis. He further demanded that the acid attacker should be awarded rigorous punishment.
