New Delhi, March 04, 2020 (PPI-OT): American technology company, Cisco Systems, has denied Indian media reports that it is helping the Indian government build a firewall to restrict internet access to restricted websites including social media sites.
A Cisco spokesperson has been quoted by Indian media as having said, “Cisco denies reports from India regarding Cisco involvement in restricting access to social media websites. Cisco strongly supports free expression and open communication on the Internet, and our policies and practices are well-established in this area.”
“We build our products to comply with global standards and sell our products globally. We do not customize our products in any way to enable censorship,” the spokesperson said, in response to a question on whether Cisco had separate policies for within and outside the US. At least two of the media reports were based on information from government sources.
Meanwhile, observers say that news reports about restrictions on social media sites were deliberately published by the Indian government to give a false impression that internet has been restored in the occupied territory. Even Congress leader and former puppet chief minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad, in a statement strongly refuted the Indian government’s claim about restoration of Internet, saying the service is still suspended in the territory.
