Pakistan has warned in the United Nations Security Council that delay in the implementation of Libya’s political roadmap could erode public trust, and urged immediate action to address the lack of progress on established timelines for electoral reforms.
During the council’s briefing on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, stressed today that the nation’s future must be decided by the Libyan people without compromising their sovereignty or national unity.
The ambassador specifically called for immediate appointments to the High National Election Commission and reforms to the electoral framework, and urged all Libyan parties to fully engage in the negotiation process sponsored by the to maintain momentum.
Acknowledging the mediation efforts to de-escalate tensions in Tripoli as a positive start, Jadoon emphasized that further confidence-building measures, implementation of agreed security arrangements, and continued progress in security sector reforms are essential for lasting peace.
He described the successful conduct of municipal elections in most parts of the country as clear evidence of the Libyan people’s commitment to the democratic process.
Linking economic stability to national unity, the Pakistani envoy welcomed positive financial developments, including an agreement on a unified development program and increased transparency in the oil sector, and stressed that a unified national budget and strong economic governance are crucial for sustainable stability.
Jadoon also highlighted the need to protect Libya’s frozen assets, and advocated for their use for the welfare of the Libyan population through close cooperation between the Libyan Investment Authority and financial institutions.
He concluded that while the challenges facing Libya are significant, they are not insurmountable, and expressed hope that with the continued commitment of all stakeholders, a united and peaceful future is achievable.
