The Dow Graduates Association of North America has awarded Professor Jahan Ara Hassan, Acting Vice-Chancellor of Dow University, with the Lifetime Achievement Award. The association bestowed this prestigious honor upon the distinguished teacher, researcher, and administrator earlier this month in Dallas, Texas.
A 1991 graduate of Dow Medical College and DUHS’s first PhD holder, Professor Hassan has dedicated over three decades to medicine and medical education. Her leadership has propelled the institution to new heights, strengthening its standing both nationally and internationally.
Professor Hassan expressed deep gratitude upon receiving the award, calling it “an emotional moment.” She acknowledged the invaluable support of her colleagues, students, and mentors. She emphasized the pivotal role of DUHS in her career, citing her graduation as its first PhD scholar in 2012, and later her recognition as the first PhD supervisor in Gynecology approved by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.
Professor Hassan’s experience includes teaching positions at the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan, involvement in national and international research endeavors, and the authorship of over 50 scholarly publications. During the Covid-19 crisis, she played key leadership roles as Medical Superintendent of DUHS Hospital and later as Director of the ICU/OT Complex. Under her leadership, the hospital obtained accreditation from the Sindh Healthcare Commission.
