Election commission braces for new delimitation

Karachi:Provincial Election Commissioner (Sindh) has asked for delimitations of union councils, union committees and wards in town committee and municipal committees for the conduct of forthcoming local government elections 2020 in the Sindh province.

According to Deputy Director (LG) Sindh, Niaz Ahmad, according to Section 20 of Sindh Local Government Act, 2013, the four-year term of Local Councils in Sindh province is going to expire in August, 2020.

Ultimately, the Election Commission of Pakistan has to fulfill its constitutional duty and legal obligation to conduct the Local Government Election within 120 days after expiry of the term of existing local councils in the Sindh Province under Sub-Section (4) of Section-219 of Election Act-2017 read with Sub-Section (3) of Section-21 of SLG-2013.

Since the working local councils were delimited on the basis of population census of 1998 and as the census-data of 1998 has already become obsolete after fresh population census in 2017, hence, the Election Commission has to carry out the delimitation of local councils in the Sindh province on the basis of fresh data of population census, 2017, as required under section-221 of election act-2017 read with section-10 of SLGA, 20103.

In this connection, it is necessary to accomplish the gigantic task for delimitation of local councils in the whole province, he said, adding the data about new delimitation should be sent to his office by August 04, 2020.
