Girls’ School Destroyed in South Waziristan

A government primary school for girls was destroyed in an overnight explosion in the Sara Ghowara area of Birmil tehsil, police said on Wednesday, amid growing concern over a series of attacks targeting educational institutions in the district.

Local residents and officials said incidents involving schools have increased in Lower South Waziristan in recent months, with several similar attacks reported earlier this year in Birmil tehsil. The recurring assaults have heightened fears about the impact on children’s education, particularly for girls in remote communities where access to schooling is already limited.

District Police Officer Muhammad Tahir Shah said unidentified assailants used explosives to demolish the school building late on Tuesday night. He added that the structure was completely destroyed in the blast.

Police have registered the incident in the daily log and launched a formal investigation to determine those responsible, Shah said. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Residents expressed alarm over the repeated targeting of educational facilities, warning that such acts threaten learning opportunities and could further undermine efforts to improve access to education in the region.
