Srinagar, July 24, 2018 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the All Parties Hurriyat Conference Chairman, Syed Ali Gilani, while expressing serious concern over the pathetic conditions of jails in and outside the territory has asked Amnesty International, Asia Watch, International Committee of Red Cross and other human rights watchdogs to come to the rescue of the Kashmiri detainees languishing in different jails.
Syed Ali Gilani in a statement issued in Srinagar said that these helpless prisoners were facing inhuman and ill treatment, were unlawfully and unnecessarily shifted outside jails and harassed on one pretext or the other. “Those languishing in Delhi’s Tihar, Srinagar Central Jail, Jammu and other jails are facing extreme situations and hence observing hunger strike for many days,” he added.
The APHC Chairman termed the inhuman treatment meted out to the prisoners as revengeful and biased, saying that the inmates particularly those lodged in Srinagar Central Jail and Udhampur are subjected to the worst physical torture and are abused and beaten.
Referring to biased authorities in Udhampur jail, Syed Ali Gilani said that prisoners lodged here were subjected to third-degree torture and were not presented in courts on scheduled dates of hearing. He said that proper medical aid and other facilities they were entitled to, according to the jail manual, were completely denied. Substandard food is supplied to the inmates, he added.
The APHC Chairman expressed deep concern over the plight of those in jails for decades together and said that slow pace of court proceedings and the criminal silence of the champions of the human rights had added to their miseries. He hailed the commitment and steadfastness of the detainees and asked the global human rights bodies to raise their voice in favour of these illegal detained Kashmiris.
