Pasban Democratic Party leaders have condemned the government’s response to the deaths caused by devastating floods in Rawalpindi and Lahore divisions. Party Vice Chairman Khalil Ahmed Thand and other officials termed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) ineffective and highlighted the administration’s failure in water resource management, which led to drinking water shortages and multiple drowning incidents. They questioned Pakistan’s ability to negotiate water rights with India in light of internal struggles.
The party officials also criticized the district and provincial administrations for failing to issue high alerts and then take action, and demanded tangible aid for flood victims instead of a social media campaign. They urged the government to learn from countries that maintain their systems during torrential rains. They said that the floods exposed poor planning and warned about the flow of floodwater from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab into Sindh. They criticized those who opposed the construction of new dams and canals.
Finally, the Pasban leaders stressed that deaths from electrocution and collapsing buildings were preventable, comparing the current situation to K-Electric’s procedure of shutting down power during rain.
