Pakistan’s National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC) today issued a significant weather alert for northern regions, warning of a potent westerly system expected to bring heavy snowfall and intermittent rain from 16 to 22 January 2026, posing a high risk of avalanches, landslides, and severe travel disruptions.
The forecast indicates that areas across Gilgit-Baltistan, such as Gilgit, Hunza, and Skardu, will be affected. Similarly, upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, encompassing Chitral, Swat, Malam Jabba, and the Kaghan valley, along with regions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir like the Neelum Valley and Muzaffarabad, are anticipated to receive considerable snowfall. Isolated thunderstorms and periodic rainfall are also predicted for some of these locations.
Authorities anticipate the heavy precipitation may lead to hazardous road conditions and temporary closures of key routes, particularly in high-altitude areas. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has highlighted an elevated threat of snow slides and avalanches at vulnerable points, which could endanger local communities and infrastructure. Disruptions to the power supply are also possible due to the severe weather.
A public health warning has also been issued concerning the extremely cold temperatures, which increase the risk of frostbite and other cold-related illnesses. The NDMA strongly advises citizens, especially children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing medical conditions, to take precautions. The public is urged to avoid non-essential travel to mountainous areas and to use snow chains if journeys are unavoidable.
The weather system”s influence will extend beyond the northern mountains. Widespread rainfall is forecast for the Pothohar region and northeastern Punjab, including major cities like Islamabad, Lahore, and Multan, between 20 and 23 January. Subsequently, isolated rain and thunderstorms are expected in various parts of Balochistan from 21 to 22 January, with scattered showers anticipated in Sindh, including Karachi, from 22 to 23 January.
In response to the alert, the NDMA has instructed provincial and district disaster management bodies to maintain a state of high alert. Preparations are underway for snow clearance operations and to ensure a swift emergency response to restore essential services like electricity and communications.
Residents are advised to stay updated on the latest weather developments through official channels, including television and radio broadcasts, NDMA”s social media platforms, and the “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” mobile application for verified information.
