High Commissioner addresses event celebrating 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak Dev at Victorian Parliament

Canberra, November 11, 2019 (PPI-OT): High Commissioner Babar Amin addressed an event held to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikh religion. The event organized by the local Sikh community at the Victorian Parliament was attended by the members of Federal and State Parliaments, government officials, and many Sikh devotees.

In his remarks, High Commissioner felicitated the Sikh community on the 550th birth anniversary of Baba Guru Nanak and lauded his message of love and peace. Briefing about the opening Kartarpur Corridor, he stated that it was a goodwill initiative of the Prime Minister Imran Khan in deference to the call of the Sikh Community and reflects Pakistan’s desire to promote peace, forbearance and harmony taking stronger roots in the region.

He informed that Sikh Pilgrims could enter Pakistan without visas through the Kartarpur Corridor to offer their prayers and respects at Gurdwara Darbar Saheb, a place where Baba Guru Nanak spend last 18 years of his life. The construction of the 4-kilometre Corridor including river bridge, its huge immigration station with 80 counters, renovated and expansion of Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Complex had been completed in a short span of nine months.

The High Commissioner also praised the Victorian government for its policy of strengthening and promoting multiculturalism. The hosts warmly thanked the government of Pakistan for fulfilling the long-standing wish of the Sikh Community and expressed the hope that this step would lead to lasting peace and stability in the region. The Australian Members of Parliament attending the event also appreciated the positive goodwill gesture by Pakistan.
